Finding the Holy Grail, Parts Two and Three: Supernatural on Location (no real spoilers)
Finding the Holy Grail, Parts Two and Three: Supernatural on Location (no real spoilers)

In my last post, I danced for having finally seen Supernatural shooting on location, even though it was night and I never actually saw Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. This post really picks up from that one, because before I left Vancouver, I managed to see filming twice more in daylight, and this time, got to see the boys at work!

I did get behind the scenes photos from both locations on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 1 and 2, including shots during filming on the first one, but I won’t post those photos until the episode (it’s 5.06) airs. [The photos are now up, since the episode has aired: see links at the bottom of this article!] The shots aren’t particularly spoilery – how often have we seen the boys walking to or from the car and talking? – but I’ll defer to the production folk, who really don’t want to see the fans spoiled before episodes air and who asked me to be discreet. All of the shots were taken from public rights of way adjacent to the filming; we were very careful never to trespass or intrude, and made certain that the crew knew that we would stop taking pictures and leave whenever they asked. They asked us to stop shooting photos before they began filming at the second location and we obliged, so I have no shots of the boys from there, but they never asked us to leave.

Without giving anything away, I can talk a bit about what I saw in terms of how things were done, and I will share one funny story from the crew and some observations of antics between takes.

ETA:  Since the episode has aired, the photos are now up!

Day one photos (from the house where the babysitter died, including shots of Jensen and Jared), are here.

Day two photos (all the setup at Jesse's/Julia's house) are here.

Thank you!
Hey Mary, thanks so much for the lovely write up. Reading through, it brought back all the details that had begun to get a bit hazy for me. :-) It was a pleasure meeting you and the others at the location. Ingrid

Re: Thank you!
Thanks, Ingrid! It was a lot of fun, hey? I'd love to do it again someday, even though I don't think it's likely ... but I'll never say never!

Fabulous report. I'm a production junkie so I love all those tidbits about how things are done. I so appreciate that you took the time to write this all out - you paint great pictures and I can see it all!

Thanks for coming, and glad you enjoyed! I'm a MAJOR production junkie, so this was paradise. I think it really surprised the crew at the Ladner location when they looked at us after a while on Tuesday and said, "You know that Jensen and Jared are gone, right? We're just going to be working on boring teaser stuff now." We assured them happily that we knew - heck, we'd seen them drive off with Clif - but we were having a blast watching the work going on as they blacked out the windows to shoot the "night" interiors and moved lights and equipment. I got the distinct impression that most times fans came to watch, they left as soon as the boys did, making it pretty evident that the J's were their only real interest. They seemed to be really delighted that we were actually interested in talking with them, not just drooling over the boys!

Man I am so jealous. You got to take pictures of the Hero car. Maybe you can give me hints next year how to duplicate your mad shoot spotting skills. The Impala....dreamy sigh. To capture it on my camera. I already with the perfect scrap booking paper too. Sigh.... It all sounds wonderful. And how nice that the crew was kind to you and helped you pick good vantage points to watch even after what happened earlier that week. It makes me hopeful that next year they won't be turned off by the fans

Zaz hoping she can make it next year and might have a chance to talk to the set design team.

I hope you get the chance, Zaz! The crew were delightful all the way around, and as long as they weren't busy, were happy to chat. I got the distinct impression that most fans who find locations are interested mostly in spotting the boys; when we hung around in Ladner even after the boys left, the crew were surprised, and more than happy to keep talking about their experiences and what went into making the show.

I was very encouraged by Russ's optimism about having a production panel at next year's Vancon. That might be enough to tempt me back ... but still only in the cheap seats, and not until I'm certain it's going to happen, which will pretty much take a renewal for season six.

Excellent write-up, Mary. The only thing I would have to add is when Jensen was playing ball with the heeler and asked us where the ball went - and none of us could tell him. Seriously, he thought we were looking at the BALL????!!!!!

Thanks for reminding me! I've amended the entry to include more fun ... *grin*

Oh, I'm so happy for you! What a fantastic experience. And it's great that you shared it with us all!! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your pix, when you're allowed.

I've seen some photos posted from the Delta shoot taken by others, and most of those are better than anything I have; I hope you're not disappointed when I finally post mine! For me, not posting until the episode airs is just the principle of the thing; I said I wouldn't, so I won't.

But the whole experience was fantastic, and made me very happy. I'd been very bummed out when I couldn't find them two years ago (for that story, go here: http://bardicvoice.livejournal.com/17970.html), so finding them this year was beyond delight!

Way awesome! I'm so jealous.

Truly awesome! I've been jealous of everyone else who found the set or got invited on, but that never impaired my enjoyment in reading about their adventures. I still can't believe I got so lucky as to become an object of envy in my own right!

That was delightful, Mary, what a detailed report. I look forward to your photos after the episodes air.

Thanks, Robin! Others have already posted photos (at least of the boys on location) better than mine, so I hope you're not disappointed when mine finally do go up ... but I chuckle when I look at pics of Dave working on the fence, all the shots of the cars, and the PAs with the fog machines and fans ... Tee-hee!
