4.1 Lazarus Rising We Have Work For You
4.1 Lazarus Rising: We Have Work For You

Sam hunts with his mind.
Divine force frees Dean from Hell:
“We have work for you.”

Episode Summary

Read the incredibly long post! Pour a drink first ...Collapse )

And now that I've finally finished mine, I'm going to go around and start trying to catch up on reading all I've missed! (And has anyone else been having a mother of a time trying to get dumb-shit LJ cuts to work? I had to wrangle code for 40 minutes to get this to come out right ... assuming it actually will come out right when I post it this time!)

Dean's ressurection makes no sense!
There's something I don't understand.

Ruby said that nothing she’d ever seen before had the power to have freed Dean, and that no demon could have done it. She means with this that lilith coudn't have ressurrected Dean? But if a cross road demon did it with Sam (before lilith was freed in the hell's gate opening, and before she managed to hold all the contracts), why did Ruby said lilith didn't have the power to free Dean?

Was it because Dean was in hell, and it was a place where even she coudn't break free before Azazael got it open? But that means that she probably had the power to free him from somewhere else (heaven, purgatory?) because the cross road demon proves that a demon can actualy ressurrect a human soul.

Something about Dean's ressurrection makes no sense :(

Re: Dean's ressurection makes no sense!
I suspect that the key difference was that Dean was in Hell, not somewhere else, and also that the demon holding his contract had no intention of letting him go. Despite that, he's now walking totally free, with no strings on his soul still connecting him back there.

In Born Under a Bad Sign, demon Meg said that getting out of Hell was really hard for a demon; flipping another soul free would doubtless have been an even greater challenge. The crossroads demon offered that in Crossroad Blues when she tempted Dean with the thought of buying John back, but we don't know whether she actually could have done it. It might have been just an illusion, a lie. Alternatively, it could have been that under those circumstances, even if he'd been restored to a body, John would still actually have been in Hell, given the abiding punishment it would have been for him to see his son having thrown away his own soul trying to redeem his father's. There might be a big difference between a temporary sojourn and true freedom from Hell.

Wherever Sam's soul went when he died, I don't believe that Hell would have been an option, so that wasn't an issue in the crossroads demon being able to bring him back. I'd call that a very different case than Dean's.

And on Lilith: she evidently hadn't gotten out of Hell herself until the devil's gate opened. Given that, I do believe the fishing souls out of Hell thing would have been beyond her capabilities, although playing with a soul she owned might have been an option.

Anyway, my thoughts on explaining away metaphysical details ... *grin*

Good Evening Professor,

My am I late to the party!!! (What can I say except that RL is such a pain sometimes and that I can't wait until I graduate!)

Anyways, what can I say about this episode that hasn't already been said. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it!!! From Dean's heartfelt reunions with both Bobby and Sam, to that tense confrontation at the diner to that end scene with Castiel. This episode left almost nothing to be desired. (I, too, am not sure if I really like this new Ruby, but I'm willing to give it time.)

Sam’s decision to hide his use of his powers until he can figure out the right words to use to explain it is clearly going to backfire on him at the worst possible moment, probably during a fight where he’ll have to use his powers in front of Dean without warning

I think that if Dean hadn't signalled him to back down in the diner this is exactly what he would have done to the demon possessed waitress who threatened Dean. And, I agree, the longer he waits the worse it's going to be when his secrets finally do come out.

I haven’t decided in my own mind whether Ruby was already in Kristy when we first saw her open the door of Sam’s motel room, but I’m inclined to think not...

I'm inclined to think the same way, as well. I actually liked Kristy in this first scene, and was quite amused (if not feeling slightly sorry for her) at how disappointed she looked when Sam got her name wrong.

Unless Castiel’s tenancy is very different than possession by a demon and can actually prevent or heal physical damage to the host body, Castiel’s vessel will be dead when he leaves it, given the gunshot and knife wounds that Dean and Bobby delivered.

I kind of was wondering about this, too. But on rewatches, I noticed that there wasn't really that much blood coming from either the gunshot or stab wounds and it makes me wonder if there's some kind or protection, or whether Castiel has a quick healing ability that the hosts inherits through being the vessel.

Speaking of Castiel, add me to the list of people who are totally digging Misha Collins and looking forward to seeing more! (Loved him in last night's episode!)

Like I said before, RL has been killing me and I'm not able to devote as much time to SN as before, but I'll be on as much as possible and know that I'll be lurking even if I don't get a chance to post!

Take care all!

You'll be welcome whenever you turn up, immie, and I'll hope that your life calms down enough to ensure that you get to fully enjoy all things Supernatural!

I've been reconsidering Kristy, and after rewatching again, I believe that Ruby was in her from the outset and the pizza dodge was her quick cover.

I wonder if we'll ever know??
