Going to ComicCon!!!
Tee-hee -- I will cheerfully admit that I've just deep-sixed every shred of common sense I possess and made reservations to fly out to San Diego and spend two days at ComicCon, all for the chance to see Eric Kripke, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Ben Edlund, and Peter Johnson in a one-hour panel on Supernatural.  The price tag for this trip is downright ridiculous, and you know something? I don't bloody well care.

Wheeeeee!!!!!

Mind you, I'm in the middle of a super-hot project with an insane deadline, but I can pull off this trip with only one day off -- leaving the day after one major briefing and getting back in the office the day before the next one. I'll take my laptop to work on the plane. But I'm going.

And that makes me very, VERY happy.

Dear Bardicvoice,

Hi my name is Brook and I talked to you earlier through your comments section on one of your Supernatural University lectures. (I was the one inquiring about transferring into your class.) Anyways, I wanted to give you a little back story on how I entered the fandom and how I came across your work. So I guess the obvious place is at the beginning.

About 5 months ago I was having a particularly depressing week so I decided to do a little impulse buying to help cheer me up. Wandering through Target I came upon a set of DVD’s titled Supernatural. I had seen several episodes and thoroughly enjoyed them but for whatever reason I never really stuck with it. So in attempt to have something fun to do over the fallowing week, I pitched them into my cart. Soon after I got home I found myself a bit more excited that I had anticipated over my little purchase. And on a whim I popped the first DVD into my player.

(I totally had to split this up because the post was too long! How funny is that? :D)

Truthfully, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but isn’t that always how these things work? Well those DVD’s were gobbled up so fast I could barely believe it myself. Consumed with the need to find out what happened next I did what every rational person would do, I headed to the internet. And my first stop was YouTube to catch up on the episodes I had missed. I watched them in order but they only lasted me several days and I felt myself starving for more, only to find that the show had just started a month long hiatus!!!

So again, I did what every “rational” fangirl would do (yes by this time I would definitely call myself that because I had seriously crossed the line into obsession), I went in search of people to talk to about this incredible new show I had discovered. And you know what I found?... Fans! Actual. Intelligent. Articulate. Fans!! And they were just as obsessed as me! Can you tell I was excited?

Anyways, Anything But Ordinary was one of the first SPN message boards I found and to this day still my favorite for real discussion; and that brings me to you. With the last aired episode, you had written one of your infamous reviews and I remember being completely blown away. The way you described each and every event perfectly with detail and whimsy had me breathless. And still does to this day. But your most recent work is what inspired the significance of this message.

It was by complete accident that I found your essay Supernatural University: Taking the Hero’s Journey. You had posted it as an entry for a supernatural meta collection and I noticed your LJ name from ABO and decided I had to see what you submitted. I should have known that it would knock the wind out of me because you see, what you wrote about was exactly what I have been trying to put into words for sometime now. As we speak I’m reading “A Hero with a Thousand Faces” because I wanted to get a better understanding of how Kripke was using it as a template for Supernatural. But in no way could I have ever understood it as well without your essay.

You see soon into the book I began to get sad for Dean because it began to seem like this was Sam’s journey and I shouldn’t get so emotionally attached to him because inevitably Supernatural is about Sam. I didn’t want to give up on Dean so I ignored these feelings and pushed onward. But you know what? You helped me see the light! I now understand that Dean and Sam both can have multiple roles. And just because Sam is on his “hero’s journey” doesn’t mean that Dean can’t be on his also! Another thing I would also like to think is that Kripke had this idea all along. He knew that Dean was more than just a companion and that John was more that just a mentor. He saw their potential and had hope for them long before I even understood their stores. It’s such a simple understanding and honestly I don’t know why I couldn’t think of it sooner, but I guess your words were the only ones I could understand.

Wow this is long and I hope it’s not too daunting for you to read, but really you don’t seem like someone that’s intimidated by words! Anyways, I would LOVE to talk to you sometime. Through e-mail is ok with me but if you have MSN I would love to speak to you over there. Picking your brain over season 3 expectations would be the highlight of my day! Well it was lovely meeting you.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Brook ♥

E-mail and also my MSN address- brooknyc@hotmail.com

P.S. I hope its ok that I posted this on your LJ because I wasn’t sure where it should go…

P.S.S I’m SOOOOO happy that your going to ComicCon!!! And I can’t wait to see all the information you bring back!

Welcome, Brook!!
I am delighted that you found your way both to "Supernatural" and here. And until I can get my old classes put up here on the LJ, feel free to track back through my TVGuide blog for the rest of them! I posted only my episode reviews/commentaries over on ABO and supernatural.tv: the "Supernatural University" classes were always only on TVGuide. Well, and now here! I'm delighted that my "Hero's Journey" blog class helped assuage your anxiety over Dean's role, and I think you're right: that even though "Supernatural" itself is largely written from Sam's perspective, Kripke intended the brothers to play equally important roles.

I'd love to talk, but I don't online chat (firewalls!), and given my work and travel schedule, connecting in real time can be problematic. I will email you, however, and trust me: you'll know it when I do. Something about the name being the same ...

I'll be in Chicago Monday through Wednesday, then back home, and after that, off to ComicCon - and if you think YOUR post was long, just wait until you see the one(s) I'll post when I get back from THAT adventure!

Welcome again!

Hi Mary,

I have found my way here thru the TV Guide Formums, I am just a lurker there so far I just haven't worked up the courage to post something usually when I write something down it does not sound as good as it did in my head.

I was wondering if you collect the trading cards, inkworks is going to have a special Supernatural 9 card set avilable only at the San Diego Comic Con(they are having a Lost and Doctor Who set too), you reserve and pay for the set and then just have to pick them up at inkworks booth at the convention. Below is the link if you are interested.

Thanks!
Welcome, Margaret, and thanks for the heads-up! I don't usually collect cards (I've collected waaaay too much stuff in my life; it's time to simplify!), but for these, I think I'll make an exception - I can think of a few folk who might enjoy cards as pressies, and since I'm going to be there anyway, well ...

Lurk if you're happy doing so, but don't be shy about posting; the TVGuide bunch are very welcoming!
