2008 LA Salute to Supernatural, Part One (Spoiler Warning!)

2008 LA Salute to Supernatural, Part One (Spoiler Warning!)

My apologies to everyone who has been waiting for me to finally get on the stick and write up my view of the LA Supernatural Creation convention. Sorry to be late to the party! I plead an incredibly busy real life and the prior commitment to get an essay submitted in the Ben Bella Books Smart Pop contest. But I’m here now, and I’m not going to leave out any of the details I remember, even though I’m sure you’ve all been inundated with everyone’s accounts, photos, and video clips. I’ve interspersed a few photos in the account, and you’re welcome to visit the broader album. Panns already posted the best of my photos here, along with Schroan’s and Met’s.

Given the length of this, I’m splitting it into two pieces, one covering Friday and Saturday, and the second dealing with Sunday. Here comes Part One! Note there are spoilers in the Kripke section, although I don't think that most people would mind them too much ...

Oh my! Thank you so very, very much for the detailed account of Kripke's panel! ♥

You are most welcome! I love the man, I swear ... *grin*

I just read both of your posts and I wondered how do you remember all those details? Did you take notes? Anyway, it was awesome to read, and much appreciated. Especially by those of us who don't attend conventions. :D

Thank you! I take sketchy notes, and have a peculiarly retentive brain that leaps from short mnemonics to vivid memories, so I'm blessed for stuff like this. And this time, I had additional help in the form of some notes from a friend of mine, panns. And I can't resist writing things up just so that I don't forget them ... *grin*

Saw your link from one of the SPN comms and wanted to thank you for your report. I've just gotten heavily into the show and I appreciate your time doing this!

Thank you, and welcome to the club! Take a wander around my blog, because if you've gotten that heavily into the show, you might find some things to enjoy here!

Cripes I hope it's not another Sam dies again scene. Twice in two finales Kripke? Not enough imagination in the writer's circle? WTF ever.

As for the "Dean is a hero" comment, how about showing it instead of just mouthing it? As for Bela, how come she gets to be involved in the mytharc and not Dean?

I wish I was there to ask. I think Kripke would hate me, but at least I'd have my say.

bardicvoicebardicvoice on April 11th, 2008 02:12 am (UTC)
Oh, come on, please - give the man a break and wait until you see the finale before you write it off, okay?

And I'm not sure that anything he said to answer you would ever satisfy you, because from where I stand, he's made it clear in the show that Dean is fully as much a hero as Sam, just in a different way. And he's in the mytharc - he's a Winchester. So I really can't see your point; I think we're looking at different worlds, not just with different eyes.

*waves* Hi

I came here through SPN Community.. I also know you from http://www.supernatural.tv/ as well.

I wanted to thank you for one of the best con reports, I have read to date. So detailed, and a lot of warning for spoilers. :) Which I read every bit of.

I liked your theory on Lilith jumping into Bela, assuming Bela comes back next season.

I knew the lack of music was due to the budget. I have heard the same complaints over on the Smallville boards, about the budget being an issue. So I wonder if the CW really doesn't have the money or just aren't giving it to their genre shows.

Sorry for the ramble there :)

Why couldn't Eric give us a hint on Dean lol I wanna know.. Bad evil cliffhangers.

Anyhow thanks again :)

You are most welcome, and thank you!

The CW really doesn't have the cash. Compared to NBC, CBS, ABC, or even Fox, well - there's no comparison. CBS treats the CW as its bastard child by Warner Brothers, and neither parent really wants to acknowledge it. I think that Supernatural being a show out of the Warner Brothers stable is a help to it, though - sort of gives it an "in" with the network's mom, so to speak. It's no surprise that the bulk of the CW's little advertising budget goes to its new shows, because if the CW doesn't build more eyes across all of its nights, it's not going to survive more than another couple of years. Sigh.

I'm just holding out for the return of new episodes ... *grin*

Hello, bardic!

I've been reading your episode commentaries on supernatural.tv, and though I was at the LA Con, I haven't gotten around to writing much of anything down. Now, thanks to you, I don't have to! ;-)

I asked a question of each guest (I asked Fred about his imdb pages, Chad about Buffy, and Kripke about the lighting), and I'm so glad someone was taking notes. I was too busy taking fuzzy pictures. (My seat was decent, but my dinky digital camera just doesn't compare to the zoom on some of the cameras in the front row.)

Hope you don't mind if I friend you. I'm not an active poster, but I do lurk on occasion.
Thanks again for the very thorough and thoughtful recap (both parts) of the con.

Glad to meet you, scaperanya! Friend away - I definitely don't mind.

Thanks for asking questions! I actually bought a new digital with a better zoom just before the con; gee, I wonder what I was thinking???

I'm very glad you've been enjoying my stuff, and stopped by to tell me so. Thank you! And I love your photo icon!

SPN and money troubles
I don't see why fans can't help with the budget. There are roughly 3 million that wiach every week. If we all sent in just even $10 a week, think how much we could help. I'm not a good organizer but will be a supporter. Anybody up for this idea can email me at brokfrack@yahoo.com Just let me know what its for. I know as much as we love the show, we can help make it better through money support.

Followed your link from your review of 6.22 here...Love reading a report from 'the early days' since I didn't find the show until season 5!

Have you been to other cons? I am going to Vancon in August!
bardicvoice: Kripke & Ibardicvoice on June 1st, 2011 02:40 am (UTC)
Welcome to the early days!

I have been to other cons, most notably the first two Vancons and last year's L.A. con. I've walked and have personal photos of the backlot and Bordertown courtesy of the very first location tour with Moviegod Russ Hamilton; wheeee! I also have a lot of personal photos from private location hunts to various places where the show has shot, and it's because of those private hunts that I managed to see some live shooting during Fallen Idols, I Believe The Children Are Our Future, and Live Free Or Twi-Hard. Check my reviews of those for links to piccies and stories, if you missed them earlier!

I still might make Vancon this year. I won't know until at least the end of June or into mid-July, though.

Have a blast! Pack snacks and water; you'll wind up waiting a LOT if you do any autographs or photo ops!
