Supernatural Report from Comic-Con!

Supernatural Report from Comic-Con

Well, folks, my sojourn at Comic-Con 2007 is over. First off, I must say, regretfully, that I have no personal close encounters of the Supernatural kind to report. And given that there were many people there with cell phones and tiny digital cameras with video capability recording the panel, you’ve probably already seen things on YouTube, so none of this may be new to you. Oh, well – I’m going to write it anyway. I attended the panel, I had a great time, and I don’t regret having gone for a moment! I don't know whether any of my photos will turn out to be decent at all (I have serious doubts), but if any do, I'll post links.

This entry will be devoted entirely to Supernatural. I’ll do a separate one addressing the more general Comic-Con experience, as well as descriptions of the two Stargate-related panels I attended, and my reaction to the delightfully sweet and funny pilot for Pushing Daisies (although I suppose that saying that much pretty well gives away that my reaction was positive … <grin>).

Wow, the level of detail you've provided as well as the very descriptive emotional content behind the comments have given me a wonderful view into what happened on the panel. I'm thrilled to read it! Thank you so much for the time it took to not only take notes but also type all this out. Terrific idea you had about collecting the promos. Some of them really are gems that we'd like to see again and so many other DVDs add promos and trailers. Thanks also for the insight into the DVD contents. Wonderful post!

They really are brothers, on and off set, aren't they? :-D That makes me happy.

do you have any photos you could share?
great report

Re: photos
Hey, deansgirl - my photos of the panel are crap compared to others that have surfaced. I have some "touring around Comic-Con" shots that I may yet figure out how to make easily available as an album in my Photobucket ... we'll see. Just haven't had much time lately, as you can tell from how long it took me to respond!

Thanks for this! Looking forward to s3, sounds great!
Although I guess I'm the only one missing sam's visions...

I´m a 39 years Brazilian woman and I loved to see that SPN "catches" people of all ages. It certainly catched me,of heart and soul.
Thank you for this delightful review.I did´t read it through yet - I printed so that I can read it on my way back home from work, as I use to do with your marvellous epidodes reviews posted at SN TV site. It´s always a delight reading your comments and you always enlight some points that sometimes we don´t pay attention or didn´t "get" at the time. So, thanks for the opportunity you gave us to know nore about this great show, the best, in my opinion.
Can I say that the relationship between the 2 brothers and the actors, the "car thing", the way they do the things, etc. reminds me Starsky & Hutch?
sorry for my english and thanks again.

Re: Thanks
Thanks, Giovanna! And don't worry about your English - you're doing fine. I'll look forward to hearing more from you! (And I've had my own amusing thoughts about two guys in a distinctive car, being a fan not only of Starsky & Hutch, but also The Professionals ...

I hope that I'll continue to entertain you for a long time to come, writing about Supernatural. May we have many more wonderful seasons to celebrate!

I enjoyed reading this, as you had included quite a bit I hadn't read elsewhere - mainly that we'll be getting to see more of Bobby's story. I am excited about that!

Hey, gendenwitha - if you read my little class on Bobby, you know that I'm really looking forward to learning his tale!

Thank you!
This was an awesome acount of the Comic-Con Supernatural pannel! I'm so glad you posted it! I live in Alaska and although I'm a huge fan of the show I never get to go to these things b/c I live so far away.

It was fun to hear that Plastic!Winchesters were there! I just heard about them a few weeks ago so I'm still working my way through the episodes and I'm only on first season but I love them! When you said that the pannel applauded the fact that Plastic!Winchesters were in the house does that mean that Eric and possibly Jensen and Jared have seen the episodes? That prospect is hilarious to me!

Thanks again!
bardicvoice: Formybrotherbardicvoice on August 9th, 2007 01:42 am (UTC)
Re: Thank you!
tomluverkris, from the expressions on their faces, I'm convinced that all the panelists had seen Plastic!Winchesters and laughed their collective asses off ... when they (meaning Jensen!) weren't blushing furiously ...

Thanks for posting. A great report and one that made me feel as though I was there. Love the way you describe reactions as well as questions and it's good to know from other's comments that I'm not the only 'older' gal who watches the show (42 years young on 6th August). Love the show and can't wait for Season 3 (even though we have to wait until next January/February in the UK before we see it).

I just friended you and hope you don't mind. I'm an idiot because I never checked to see if you had an lj account. I read your blog at tv guide regularly, but I don't comment much anymore (my screen name there is parallelverse) since I got all wrapped up in lj and started writing fanfic again (just not enough hours in the day, mores the pity). I really enjoyed your recounting of the Comic Con panel. Even though I have seen the video of the whole thing on the internet, your description of it added additional dimension and insight, which I really enjoyed.

Hey, ParallelVerse/riverbella - friended you right back! Hope I keep seeing you whether here or on TVG ...

Thanx for the break down. I know how hard it is to recall stuff when your enjoying the moment.

SN at Comics Con
Thanks so much for the report. Lucky you to have been able to get in and see the SN panel. Love your reviews at SN.TV as well. Keep going! You're awesome! :-)

Novembersguest and Bardicvoice,
I’m BethH and I feel I must defend myself! Yes, I commented over at Movieweb that I thought the panel seemed flat, but – believe it or not – I also happen to be the “quick-witted woman" Bardicvoice quoted in her summary:
One quick-witted woman shouted back, “More coverage of Supernatural in TV Guide, and you’ll have it!” and the resounding cheers and applause made that truth apparent.

First let me say I really enjoyed attending the panel, especially getting to see Jensen in person and knowing how many of you really wanted to but couldn’t go. I was also fortunate to see his movie “Ten Inch Hero” in LA a few days before his appearance at Comic Con. So I am a fan!

In my Movieweb post, I didn’t say Jensen was tired. As you said in your post novembersguest (“people should realize that Jensen was probably exhausted beyond belief!”), I was merely asking another poster to give Jensen a break since he’d gone to bed at 2:30 am and then caught an early flight to San Diego – all for us! As any of you can see by looking at pictures of Jensen at Comic Con, he looked very good (!) and not the least bit tired.

Now, about the panel (referring to the overall discussion, not the individual people) being flat, perhaps a better choice of words would have been slow to get started. Jensen and the gang were not present for the video presentations, which were hindered a bit because of some technical difficulties starting the second video. I’ve attended other panels and seen that half the fun is watching how the actors respond to their own performances. As Bardicvoice described in her wonderful summary above, the best parts of the discussion came when the panelists directly interacted with the fans – that’s when everyone seemed to be the most animated and energetic. I think in the future they should bring the panelists out from the beginning, lose the moderator, and go directly to the fans for questions. Call me greedy, but I wanted to see Jensen (and next time hopefully Jared, too) for the entire hour of the discussion!

If there’s the slightest tinge of disappointment in my comments, it’s perhaps due to unrealistic expectations on my part. After watching the DVD of the Supernatural panel at the Paley TV Fest, I was really hoping to witness the chemistry between Jensen and Jared in person. The Comic Con panel was great and I should appreciate it for what it was, but it obviously wasn’t complete without Jared!

Thanks for listening and I hope you’ll forgive me if you feel I was critical of any of the panelists.

Hey, BethH - glad to "meet" the "quick-witted woman" recalled in my post! Nice job on the witty repartee, there; I wonder if it helped to get Supernatural mentioned on the cover of next week's TV Guide magazine, in the shortlist of the 66 shows they were describing from the upcoming season?

I understand the greedy desire for more Jensen, Eric, Sera, and Ben (and Jensen, and Jensen, and it really is too bad about Jared ...). The panel ran much as I expected it to, given the venue, so I think I wasn't burdened with a discrepancy between expectation and reality to tinge toward disappointment.

But someday, I'd love to see just our folks, and all together, for two hours or more ...

Hi, BethH again. Bardicvoice, as you stated in your summary, fans had to chose between seeing the panel or getting in line for autographs. Unfortunately, this seems to be a recurring problem for Warner Bros. I was at last year’s Comic Con and met frustrated Veronic Mars fans who made the decision to skip the panel discussion and queue for autographs because of what had happened at the 2005 Con! It’s ludicrous that they force us to make such decisions! Hopefully, the best thing about the Supernatural autograph debacle (i.e., cutting short the signing), is that WB will realize how big and loyal a fan base Supernatural has!

I'm a little late in replying but I just wanted to thank you for your review! It was a great read and now I'm really looking forwards to that gag reel footage :)

Hey, thanks so much for the great recap. I was there and you refreshed my memory on some of the great exchanges. The hour seemed to fly by with so much fun and new info. Everyone on the panel seems to totally love this show as much as we do and of course, Jensen was so refreshing and witty. You are absolutely right that it is the way he says things and his facial expressions that truly tells the story. It really was unfortunate we missed out on his rapport with Jared, but maybe next time?

I loved your question about the promos on the DVD and it shocks me that they hadn't considered it, I always thought it made perfect sense. Like you said, the promos are brilliant and they already have them ready to copy off and insert into the DVD extras. Let's hope they listen and put them on future DVDs.

Oh, and thanks for explaining the autograph session thing. It is totally stupid to make you choose one or the other. Personally, I really wondered about the safety of Jensen and the others since I was almost crushed just trying to navigate the crowds down there and exit the area. It was truly a mob scene and it would have been so much better security wise to have the session in the other area. Warner Brothers seemed like they delighted in creating chaos. I only wanted a Supernatural poster (which I never got, since they were always out) but one time I walked through with a mob there and a girl was walking the counter asking questions, trying to get the crowd worked up.

Like you, I only hope that the PTB realize what a phenomenal show they have and promote it accordingly.

Thanks again for a great report. Take care, B.J.

Thanks, BJ. I'm wishing I'd wandered over to the center front section of the panel audience before the thing started and just said, "Hey, I'm Bardicvoice - so how many of you do I know from supernatural.tv, LJ, and other sites, hmm?" Of course, if I'd done that, I'd have lost my seat in jig time ...
bardicvoice: Formybrotherbardicvoice on August 9th, 2007 01:57 am (UTC)
Thanks to everyone who wandered by and left a comment! I've been so stinking busy that I haven't been responding, and for that, I apologize ... but I'm really glad you all came by!
